CODES & CANOPIES: Art Beyond the Age of Algorithms

Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art presents "CODES & CANOPIES," a major technology-art group exhibition spanning AI Art, Bio Art, Virtual Art, and Space Art, with several works shown in Suzhou for the first time; exhibition design by KITCHEN.

From 30 August to 15 November 2026, "CODES & CANOPIES: Art Beyond the Age of Algorithms" is presented in Hall 6 (Floors 1–2) of Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art (Suzhou MoCA), marking the most forward-looking stop in the museum's opening exhibition series. Curated jointly by Alistair Hudson, director of ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, and Zhang Zikang, director of the Shenzhen International Art Museum and professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the exhibition brings together work across four frontier fields — AI Art, Bio Art, Virtual Art, and Space Art — with pieces by leading international artists including Refik Anadol and Anicka Yi shown in Suzhou for the first time.

The exhibition is organized around two core concepts: "codes," no longer merely a technical language but a core logic shaping images, information, life, and environment; and "canopies," pointing both to the museum's own architectural form and to shelter, connection, and coexistence. Sixteen artist groups from China and around the world present work grounded in organic matter and real data, exploring new paradigms of interdependence among humans, machines, and ecology.

Participating artists include Refik Anadol, Yunchul Kim, Liu Jiayu, Tristan Schulze, Wang Yuyang, and Liu Xiaodong (AI Art); Ryan Gander, Marc Lee with Iris Qu and Shervin Saremi, and Zhang Peili (Virtual Art); Marco Barotti, Thomas Feuerstein, Otobong Nkanga, Anicka Yi, and Long Pan (Bio Art); and Justine Emard and Nahum (Space Art).

Exhibition design is by KITCHEN.
